Dave Ramsey gets due credit here. He planted the seed in my mind – and in the minds of many others – about making “being weird” a life goal. Here is the context of Ramsey’s thought: the average American owes about $16,000 in credit card debt, almost $30,000 in auto loans, and around $180,000 in home mortgages. Now, if you have half that national average, it would be unusual, but not weird. Weird is to have none of that! And that is what Ramsey encourages people to do – pay off all debt, including your home mortgage! I listen to his radio talk show as often as I can.On Fridays the emphasis of the show is people calling in to do their “debt-free scream” on air. They tell their story of working to get completely out of debt; then at the end, they get to scream to a listening world, “We’re debt free!” I typically get choked up hearing that. It is wonderful!So, I would join Dave in that area of encouragement. Take his “Financial Peace” course, if you haven’t yet. Get on your way to financial weirdness. My wife and I took the course several years ago; it was very helpful and worth every dime.I want to encourage you to pursue weirdness in other ways, too. I have found that in most areas of life, being different from most people is a good thing. Frankly, most people are doing the wrong things in many areas of their lives. And none of us do the right things in all areas. Thus, we all can do better; all of us can make some better choices in our lives.Whether you want to improve your physical health, deepen your spiritual life, develop a new skill, master an old one, or improve your relational life, you must make new choices and sustain those choices over time. Most of us are great at starting things, but sustaining is a different thing altogether. You start to be weird when you sustain positive changes.


Jesus affirmed this truth in His teaching. He said “narrow is the road that leads to life and broad is the road to destruction” (Matthew 7:13.14). Wide roads exist where “most people” travel; narrow roads exist where few travelers are inclined to go. Honestly, if you’re really going to walk the road of life with Jesus, you’ll have to do things most people are not doing, even things most “church people” are not doing.For instance, a recent piece of research from the Pew Research Center showed that about 36% of Americans attend church weekly, 33% attend about once per month, and about 30% seldom or never attend. I want to focus on that 36% that attend weekly for a moment. If we assumed that all of these went to Bible preaching churches (not a reasonable assumption), I would expect that the percentages of those involved in Bible studies and/or small groups (in addition to a worship service) would be half or less. Honestly, if you want to really grow in your faith, you must do more than regularly attend a worship service. You will have to study on your own. The path to weirdness requires it.If you want to have a great marriage and family, you will have to do things most people are not doing. Most people are doing the things that account for sorry divorce statistics and homes that are not very functional, though they may never divorce for one reason or another. There are many excellent books on marriage and parenting and relational dynamics. People like me present seminars and retreats and other special events to equip you for success. Whether books or seminars or podcasts or whatever, you have to embrace them, make time for them, invest in them. In my experience as a counselor, I would estimate that less than half the people who are candidates for the help of a Christian counselor, actually reach out for it. And this is no estimate: in my experience over 30 years, most wait until they are in crisis to solicit any help. They have not wanted to be “weird.”Time management and resource management is key to this. If we hope to enjoy success – way beyond average – we cannot afford to listen to ourselves say over and over, “Well, I’d love to do that, but I just don’t have the time or money or… ” Listen to people who followed Dave Ramsey to financial freedom and you will hear people who started finding the way rather than another excuse to not take it. They began to use their God-given creativity to overcome obstacles that hold “most people” back, obstacles that had held them back from blessings for too long.Ramsey encourages a radical attitude towards debt. He wants people to see it as an enemy, an enemy that needs to be fought with faith that it can be defeated. I work with people all the time whose struggle is not primarily financial. They have been in bondage to ignorance and lies of various sorts. They never learned wholesome relational skills, or the truth about a host of experiences they had to endure. They have heard the “church answers” about who they are, but down deep inside are the contrary lies they have lived with so long that those lies seem to be Gospel – though there is nothing good about that news, nothing true about it.Not everyone Ramsey helps is in great debt. Many are honestly doing okay, but they have a sense that they can do better, want to do better. They are humble enough to solicit and embrace the help God provides. Likewise, not everyone that we work with in counseling has a terrible abusive relational history. Many have simply become aware that what they are doing in their life is not working as they believe it should. In humility, they reach out for help. Many have found God faithful to provide that help through a Christian counselor.


I want to encourage you to consider some radical steps to claim more of what God wants for you in Christ. Radical steps may vary from person to person. Maybe you have a hobby that needs to be pared back, cut off for a season, or eliminated completely. I remember hearing a pastor testify about selling his golf clubs. He realized that he didn’t have time for golf, if he intended to have time with his wife and children as a pastor. That is radical. That is weird. That is exactly what I am talking about. I imagine many people today need to curtail time on social media, cut out considerable TV viewing, and Internet hours in favor of better things.Why don’t most of us do these things? Maybe because the better things of life are not the funner things of life. Do I want to read the marriage book the pastor recommended or watch some football? No contest. I’ll get to that book later. Do I want to journal about my relationship with my father or go to the mall? No contest. Wonder what we’ll find on sale.School is back in session. It’s a good time to make changes. Actually, it is always a good time to make positive changes. Would you pray about how God might want to make you more weird? Please don’t overwhelm yourself. Find a thing or two to work on. Humble yourself. Find the help you need. Go to work. Work with determination to be a victor. Depend daily on the grace of God for the wisdom and strength you need.
